Economic Globalization has swept across the world since the end of WWII. Slowly but surely all the nations across the world have been impacted by Economic Globalization. India for example, has been one of the countries that has been recently hit by the storm, and India’s economy can be seen to still be shooting up. In my paper I will be discussing the Economic Globalization of India, the roots of the globalization to occur, the effects it had and the negative effects it had. Effects such as foreign trade, economic growth and GDP (Gross Domestic Product). From the mid 90’s to current times India sees the effects of globalization, bringing India into one of the top countries in the world in terms of GDP being ranked at 10th in the world. The economic globalization in India began in the 90’s with the economic growth being credited to advances in IT (Information Technology) business. â€Å"One of the major forces of globalization in India has been in the growth of outsourced IT and business process outsourcing (BPO) services† (1). The past few years have seen more and more educated people due to India’s low cost of labor but educated and English speaking workforce. With economic globalization hitting India in the IT and BPO fields, it has allowed companies to expand their operations to India to take advantage of their massive growth opportunity. Analysis of Phineas and Gene´s Friendship Essay - 609 Words

Competition and rivalry have the ability to make people shine and accomplish things they never thought possible, and the ability to bring a person’s dark side and get them to do terrible things. Phineas and Gene’s friendship is viewed very differently by each of them. Where Phineas sees Gene as his best friend Gene sees Phineas as a competitor. Gene sees him as someone trying to keep him from being successful in school. This warped view of their relationship is the cause of many of the eventual problems of the novel and arguably the death of Phineas. Competition between peers makes people strive to try and be better than their opponents, and can be healthy or unhealthy depending on the competitors and their responses to the competition.†¦show more content†¦Sometimes this causes built up resentment and eventually could cause both of the friends to be hurt because of one rash decision like shaking a tree branch. While only Phineas was physically hurt Gene was in an emotional battle with himself about what he has done to Finny and what he thinks of him. Eventually the other boys at Devon find out Gene shook the tree branch, which causes them to lose respect of him. The thought of shaking Phineas out of a tree would have never normally crossed Gene’s mind but him viewing Phineas as a competitor instead of a friend made the idea seem fine for the split second it took for him to shake the branch. The idea hit him just like when he thinks about stealing the doctor’s car. He only even thinks about shaking the limb for an instant, a single life changing moment, and with â€Å"some kind of blind impulse†, as Phineas describes it, he shakes the branch. In contrast when he â€Å"idly considered stealing† a car even if he thinks about it for a second he can decide not to after the first few steps. Once the tree branch is shaken Phineas’ fate is sealed. The Last Leaf free essay sample

The Last Leaf (by O. Henry) Analysis O. Henry is one of the most famous American short story writers. His real name was William Sydney Porter and he was born on September 11, 1862. In 1894 was accused of stealing money and went to prison. While in prison Porter first started to write short stories. After Porter was released, he changed his name to O. Henry and published his stories in magazines. O. Henry’s short stories are famous for their surprise endings and humor. O. Henrys wrote such classic short stories as The Ransom of Red Chief, â€Å"The Gift of the Magi† and â€Å"The Furnished Room†. One of his stories with surprise endingis The Last Leaf. The theme of the story is hope belief and self-sacrifice. When Mr. Behrman hears of the severity of Johnsy’s condition, he decides to help. So Johnsy will be convinced to fight the pneumonia, he paints the exact image of the last leaf on the branch outside her window the day the last leaf fell. The story does foreshadow him painting the leaf in that he is always talking about the masterpiece he is going to paint and how he is a protector of the two young women that live above him. Now the inference that can be taken from his actions is that he had touched no one with his art he had no true masterpieces. By painting the last leaf he insured that johnsy would be affected by his art even only to get her through her illness. He paints a leaf in the pouring rain just for her and so she would pull through. She realized her foolishness when the leaf had staid and made a complete turnaround. The work done by Behrman saved her life he had an impact on an audience witch is all any artist can ask for. The irony that his best work caused him to lose his life it is also worth looking into. He had yet to reach anything of value tell this leaf and he dies two days later before Johnsy even knows what he had done for her. He doesn’t even get to see if he would pull through. This irony could be to show how much of a sacrifice he made or to illustrate just how much he cared for these two women that lived above him. He gave all he had to give Johnsy a chance of living. This means there is more to the relationship of those in this building other then just as living together. He cares for them that is obvious but why. He seems to be harsh toward them and the only reason you could put on it is because they pay him t o be a model and he didn’t want to lose them in that regard. This still comes across as quit cold and vague, not really a good place to end a story. There is not much to work with to form an argument of why witch I take as it leaves it to the reader to justify his actions this allows each reader come up with a different reason that works for them. This makes it to where each reader walk away happy with the ending though this is rendered point less by the fact that one can simply see it when trying to look past the surface. The relationship between Johnsy and Sue is far closer than just that of roommates. One piece of evidence toward this is how offended Sue becomes when the doctor asks it there is a man in Johnsy’s life. This shows that Sue doesn’t want there to be and takes offence to the idea. Why would a roommate take offence to a stranger asking if there was man in their roommate’s life? This adds a sense of care toward Johnsy and possibly a want for her not to find a man. Later in the same statement Sue asked, â€Å"is a man worth† but catches herself, then just answers the doctor’s question. Showing she has a low worth of men and tends not to take them with much value. The doctor is asking on the grounds of trying to see if Johnsy has anything to live for. It seems Sue takes offence to the fact that she isn’t good enough to live for.. At one point in the story Johnsy is talking about how she can’t wait to die and Sue asks her,† What would I do without you†. This seems like she is more concerned than just with the next month’s rent. Another piece of evidence that Sue and Johnsy who are two woman living alone together at the turn of the century this story is set sometime during the 1890s. It’s extremely odd that two women of this time period would live together especially alone and without a man. There are a multiple times where Sue holds Johnsy, now this could be dismissed as her friend is dying but coupled with other evidence it is possible to conclude there is more going on. There is another part of the story where johnsy apologizes for how she treated Sue why she was sick. She is deeply apologetic and tends uses Sues pet name of Sudie for the first time. Their relationship is very intrinsic and has a romantic element to it. To be honest when I first skimmed this I thought it was a man who was sick and a woman he loved caring for him but when going through more in depth for my paper I realized it was two women. The argument they are more than roommates has much more weight than most would admit. This hits that they could be a romantic couple though this is never admitted. Though this could be taken in to account on why Sue stops herself from finishing her thought in front of the doctor and could add a new element of how Behrman protects these women. The evidence points one direction that is hard to ignore. The last point to focus on in this peace is that it a very negative tone despite the fact that the end of the story Johnsy lives. The first negative observation is when johnsy is wishing for death. This is a very negative thing when someone wishes for death it usually is a sign of great discomfort or a plea for help. Johnsy seems almost excited at the prospect of being done with this disease that is ravaging her body. The symbolism is also darker in nature comparing Johnsy to a fallen white statue is one such example. This paints a very sad picture that this poor girl is not long for this world. Another use of literary devices in a negative since is when pneumonia is personified as a man killing people left and right. This makes it seem as a serial killer rather than a disease. Some may argue that the ending is happy Johnsy lives but at what cost. Death in the end still takes a life of a man that gave everything to save a girl that had no hope in her own survival. There is a line in the story that Johnsy says when she realizes how glum her outlook has been that sums it up pretty well calling it a sin how she had been acting. Johnsy throughout the story demands things from Sue such as calling for the blinds to be opened so she can see the ivy vine. This shows that she wasn’t very nice to her in while she was sick. The doctor gives Johnsy a 10 to 1 chance this is glum news. Sue try’s to make it seem better by comparing it to going by new buildings in the city. Though this has little effect and is shot back down by Johnsy. Throughout the story dark tones make it seem miserable and when hope is given it is quickly shot back down. This sets a tone of negativity in the whole story. This tone helps draw the reader sown to a sad emotional state and tends for them to see Johnsy situation as hopeless. The stories points of analyses are that of their relationship being more then roommates, why Behrman painted the leaf, and the negative tone of the story. These all can be explored to a great depth and shown in many ways. The relationships of this story are what make it an interesting piece. This story has many layers and O’Henry has made a truly lasting story that has a value far beyond that of a usual short story that will insure this one lasting for ages.

Questions: 1. According to the article, Donald Trump dislikes big global firms. Explain why, outline his planned policy changes and discuss how these policies could affect US consumers? 2. Multinational companies (MNCs) boomed in the 1990s. Examine the key factors that contributed to the growth of the market power of MNCs? 3. The profits of multinationals have dropped by 25% and a 30-year window of arbitrage is closing. What is meant by arbitrage and according to the article, what are the factors leading to the current rise of local companies at the expense of global ones? Answers: 1. According to the report published in the Economists, it has been seen that Donald Trump has planned to take up a major restructuring in their business policies and thereby slaughtering the power of the big firms and prioritizing the small indigenous firms (www.economist.com, 2017). As a result, this is going to influence the US consumers by creating an upward pressure on prices. The supply is going to reduce. On other hand, as US is planning to shirk off the foreigners working in their MNCs, hence local indigenous people needs to be appointed to meet up the gap. This is going to increase the labor cost thereby the total cost of production. Henceforth, the price of the product is going to raise causing inflation in the economy and a hole in the consumers pocket. In addition, people who have been habituated in using a wide range of products is going to face scarcity in their choices and henceforth is going to face problems. Therefore, three main problems has been identified that the consumer of U.S is going to face namely, problem of choice, increasing cost and reduction in the supply of products (Jensen, Quinn Weymouth, 2015). 2. The decade of 1990s saw a boom in the global economy. Trade policies in the international market have been liberalized in the initial years of the decade. This decade has also been referred to as the golden era of MNCs in global business (Guilford 2016). The key factors that led to the growth of MNCs during this age is as follows: After trade liberalization and opening of the economy, EU integrated with China and Soviet Union to continue their international trade. There has been a constant inflow of foreign investment in those MNCs. This has increased their efficiency and scale economy. The companies has been able to keep their production cost low by outsourcing their business and hiring cheap employees from South Asian nations like India, Bangladesh and China. There has been a radical change in the technologies used by these companies. The emerging economies allowed the influx of MNCs within their economy as it created jobs and employed their population. On other hand, they were able to get benefit from receiving goods at cheaper price. 3. Arbitrage implies the process of selling and consuming same products at different prices in the global market. In this case, the term has been used to define the international trade conducted by the MNCs by recruiting cheap labor from other nations and hiring technologies (Tweed 2017). A highly efficient trade with global economy is going to be strategically slaughtered. The low oil price along with strong dollar has led to this reduction in revenue earnings. The factors that have helped the local companies to rise up and beyond the MNCs are as follows: MNCs are now facing a rise in their cost of production as wages in many countries like China are increasing. The share of profits of these MNCs is continuously decreasing and it decreased to almost 25% within a short span of 5 years. The government is focusing on the local firms by cutting down taxes. Also, by increasing export and import duty of the MNCs the government tried to curb their power thereby enhancing local trade References: Guilford, G. (2016). Hepatitis B Can Be Prevented With A Highly Effective Vaccine, But This

Hepatitis B can be prevented with a highly effective vaccine, but this year ten to thirty million people will become infected with the hepatitis B virus. I feel that because this disease is preventable, only knowledge can help reduce the number of people infected. Hepatitis B is a serious liver disease caused by the hepatitis B virus. This virus is a blood-borne pathogen. It is one hundred times more infectious than HIV. "Hepatitis B is one of the most frequently reported vaccine preventable diseases in the United States," according to the Centers for Disease Control. This disease is transmitted through oral, vaginal, and anal sex. You can also acquire the disease through sharing needles, toothbrushes, and razors, or if you come in contact with infected blood. For these reasons, the people at the highest risk of contracting the disease are: anyone who is sexually active; health, dental, and emergency workers; adoptive families with children form Asia, Africa, South America, Eastern and Mediterranean Europe (as these areas have a high number of people infected); drug users; and anyone in close contact with someone infected. This is not as scary as it seems, for you cannot contract the virus through sneezing, coughing, or holding hands. A surprising fact about hepatitis B, considering it is preventable, is that one in twenty people are or will be infected in their lifetime. There are one million people infected in the United States. More than 350 million people worldwide are chronic carriers of the virus. A chronic carrier is someone with the virus in their blood, and can who can pass the disease to others. Fifty percent of those infected with the virus (a.k.a. HBV) do not develop symptoms. HBV is often called the "Silent Infection". Another forty nine percent experience fevers, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. Many people think that it is just the flu and ignore their symptoms. Some other symptoms include abdominal pain or swelling, jaundice, dark colored urine or light colored bowel movements. The other one percent develops acute fulminant hepatitis. Of those infected with it, sixty to ninety percent of all cases result in fatalities. It is characterized by fatigue- most often resulting in collapsing, and jaundice- yellowing of the skin due liver malfunctions. There is no medical treatment for hepatitis. Although, with bed rest ninety percent of those infected will develop antibodies and fight off the disease. If the body fails to fight it off, some (five to ten percent) will develop chronic hepatitis. These people have an increased risk of liver problems, like cirrhosis (hardening of the liver) and liver cancer. Some chronic cases will need liver transplants. There is no cure for hepatitis B, but there are some drugs to help. Interferon helps to quicken the rates of remission. There are also two drugs that are in the last phase of FDA approval- lamivudine and famciclovir. These are thought to be available toward the end of the year. If you have contracted HBV, you should immediately contact a doctor, and get regular checkups. If you are pregnant you should make sure to tell your doctor so they can protect your baby. Also, make sure close contacts are vaccinated. And most of all- no alcohol, because it will further damage your liver. There is only one sure way to protect yourself- get vaccinated. The vaccine is very safe and effective. It is in the form of three shots, given over a period of six months. The shots can be given at a doctor's office or at school clinics. One very informative source is The Hepatitis B Foundation. The address is: 700 East Butler Avenue Doylestown, PA 18901 (215) 489-4900 For additional help contact your doctor. Hepatitis B is a very infectious disease, but the most important thing to remember is that it can be prevented with three simple shots. There is no excuse as to why anyone should not be vaccinated!

Appraise Areas of Early Childhood Development Coursework

Appraise Areas of Early Childhood Development - Coursework Example From birth to the early childhood, a child is most vulnerable to the required changes in the personality and mind set. After the childhood, the habits may develop and then it is difficult to change these habits. Most of the other experts give equal importance to the language development in the children. Language is the basic tool to communicate with others. If not anyone knows the proper and ethical use of language then it is possible that he will fail to convey his message to the other people. In this way, it is a matter of fact that language development is also very necessary for the children. Here it is important to notice that this language development is best possible in the early ages of a child otherwise it will be difficult for the parents. In short, words we can say that the early years of lives of children are the best possible opportunity to make a good and beneficial person in all regard. The things happening at this point of time, are actually building up the mindset of the children, which may not change in the coming years. Cognitive Development: At first, there comes the cognitive development of a child, which is the most important perspective of the growth and development of any child. The cognitive development may show the growth and development of the brain of the children. There are several theories and practices, which are extracted after great research and analysis. These theories suggest different perspectives regarding the cognitive or we can say brain development of the child (Burger, 2010). The famous theorist Piaget says that at first the child may learn to react to those things, which are directing affecting him. It means that he can easily forget the other surrounding environment. After this stage, there comes a phase where the child is concerned about learning those things which affect him in either situation. After remembering these things, he may try to react towards those actions or movements.

Women Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Women - Essay Example Equality refers to the state where individuals living in a society are free from the discrimination at all the levels. However, the discrimination and its various components are subject to continuous change with respect to time, knowledge, experience and understanding of people. This indicates that things which were acceptable for a particular society few years back might not be appreciable in the current circumstances. Let’s talk about women and their social status which was limited to the domestic work few decades before. Due to this they were substantially facing equality issues. But today the modern human society does not have any place for such differences and women are no longer bounded to the domestic restrictions. Though women have entered into the work force, the employment opportunities are limited for them and consequently they are often subject to employment based discrimination. According to Abella, equality in employment signifies that every individual is given a n equal working opportunity irrespective of all the innate abilities (Abella; Chapter 1: Defining Equality in Employment, 1984). In the contemporary world equality in employment has yet another perspective i.e. employees must be treated as per their differences, because if we are ignoring the individual differences for the sake of equality then as per the arguments of Abella, it is also a form of discrimination. There are basically two types of differences, one which arises due to personal actions and policies such as education, financial status, etc. and other is solely based upon the innate characteristics such as gender, ethnic background or disabilities. The latter one can be accommodated through equality in employment. One of the most significant methods to apply employment equality in a workplace is to remove the individual differences based on gender, disability, ethnicity or race because they do not have any acceptable justification (Abella; Chapter 1: Defining Equality in E mployment, 1984). In this regard Agocs, Burr and Somerset have given several remedies which require the employers to first eradicate the current employment obstacles faced by the disadvantaged groups of the society such as aboriginal people, women and other minorities, who need to have an equal employment opportunity without any difference of treatment. Their innate disabilities and skill deficiencies must be accommodated. The second most crucial remedy is the surety of prevention from future discrimination. Third remedy focuses on the equal distribution of resources among the workforce regardless of gender, race, ethnicity or disability (Agocs, Burr and Somerset; Chapter 1: The State of Art, 1992). The Report of the Royal Commission 1984 has a legislation regarding the equality in employment which considered compulsory employment regulations so as to ensure equal employment opportunity for the disadvantaged groups of the society. In the later part of the second chapter, authors hav e discussed further solutions that can play an important role in the elimination of discrimination and projection of equal employment opportunities. In this regard we first of all require developing a sound understanding of what does inequity means and where does it exist in a workplace. Subsequently we need to remove all the barriers for the disadvantaged groups through employment equity programs. Afterwards we necessitate developing smooth access to the jobs with an additional accommodation program which satisfies the needs and requirements of an intensely diverse workforce. Equal Employment opportunity also requires the employers to maintain an ethical and hospitable internal working environment

The Taobao website is one of the commonly used websites in China, Which plays a leading role in Chinese e-commerce industry. People buy products online through Taobao. The Taobao Company made significant profits in recent years. In this report, it is going to display the advantages of using the Internet in Taobaos business. in the first part. In this part, the report mention about the Taobao GDP contribution, new management mode build up and job opportunities provided. In the second part, the report illustrates that the disadvantage of using the Internet in Taobaos business, in this part of view, the report points out the time-wasting, risk in internet shopping and negative impacts of business efficiency. This essay aims to analyze the advantages and the disadvantages of using the internet in Taobaos business. The advantages of using the internet in Taobaos business The first advantage is the GDP contribution by Taobao internet business. According to the online auction statistic from Chinese Network Information Center (CNNIC) in 2006, there were totally 12.27 million internet users in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou which are the top three cities in China. The data which included 3.3 million people who experienced the internet online transactions. It shows that there are huge internet-shopper populations in China, especially for the economic-booming cities. Taobao plays a leading role in e-commerce industry and gain plenty of loyalty customers, most of willing to introduce Taobao to their friends who attempt to go shopping in the internet. Under the large user volume, Taobao gives the reason why it can create GDP increasing. According to the data from 2008 China Online Shopping Report, Taobao occupied 67% of Chinese C2C market in 2005. Furthermore, in 2007, it owned 70.4% of online customers. Taobao could have more than 10 million RMB businesses only in one month. Taobao could bring more than 1 billion RMB to Chinese GDP. As the income, expenditure and output influence the GDP increase, thus, with Taobao development, more GDP increase could be bring. Nowadays, Taobao became an essential part of Chinese GDP increase. Taobao started Chinese internet shopping business model. Hoskins (2002) points out that the internet is absolutely cheaper than other traditional media. The internet market can cover the whole world customer. The internet business may generally replace the traditional businesses. Because Taobao belongs to e-commerce, the communication of the organization is not as same as those companies who operate in a specific space. In order to make communication sufficiently under business operation, Taobao is forced on the three main areas of management. First, Taobao create an online communication tool which is called Aliwangwang for Taobaos buyers and sellers. According to Trites (2008), Aliwangwang, which is ranked as the most satisfied service of Taobao, because the third party is unnecessary for the communications between sellers and buyers? Second, Taobao designed a new feedback system. Li el at. (2007) display that the sellers will give the feedbacks within a period of 14 days, the sellers reputation will be influenced by buyers feedbacks. If a seller got 10% dissatisfied feedback, the system will shut down the booth in two months. (Source: Research on Chinese C2C E-Business Institutional Trust Mechanism: Case Study on Taobao and Ebay.cn, 2007) In the figure 1 which displays above, it is clearly shows that the feedback mechanism in Taobao. All sellers in Taobao have to be evaluated by this feedback data, if any sellers more than 30% negative total negative feedback data, it means they could lost the chance to do business in Taobao. Third, the design of Taobaos website is attractive, the fashionable website design style always catch young peoples eyes, even a part of elder customers are willing to suffer Taobao because the website design style. Taobao divided products into different categories, such as men, women, baby, and electronic products. After click the guild link, the customer can find more details for the selling goods. It is easily and efficiently to find the products what they want. According to China Economic Analysis (2002), China has 7% unemployment rate almost reached the national unemployment rate warming level. Taobao provided job opportunities to the unemployment population. According to Li el at (2009), Taobao provided more than 600 thousands job opportunities. Among 570 thousand people enjoyed the employment chances provided by Taobao. Many sellers in Taobao traded their business as their careers and many of them had better lives depends on Taobao business. Under the stiff competition, there are a large of unemployment people with business vision but cannot find a job in top business companies. They use Taobao to fulfill their dream, some of them have their own clothes manufacturing factory after they started business in Taobao. For example, in 2009, the unemployment in Jiangsu Province located in the south of China has serious unemployment rate which shows 3.09 %. The data from the local government shows that Taobao offered 5.7 million job opportunitie s directly and more than 10 million job opportunities indirectly. Such as the development of Delivery Company, the needs of delivery employee must be increase.(Pan, 2001) The disadvantages of using the internet in Taobaos business Young people spend too much money on Taobao internet shopping. Because the selling prices in Taobao are cheaper than in the other places. According to Pan (2001), pricing has a significant influence for selling goods but with negative coefficient and absolute value. Because buyers cannot identify the goods visually, the high price goods are harder to sell. Beside, Majority of young people cannot afford the high price products which are sold in other shops. For this reason, they prefer to shop at Taobao. Moreover; many sellers on Taobao, who work as part-time, spend too much time on their business. When they concentrate on their Taobao business, their assignments form the company maybe delays. It is difficult to avoid the risks for the seller and buyer on Taobao. Kiang el at. (2009) discovers that the buyers have to accept the high risks for purchasing online. For this reason, this leads to a significant obstacle in internet commercial business. Credit card fraud problems, is caused by people who make business on the internet, are continuously increasing. Only after information flow, capital flow and logistics finished backflow, the business deal could be regarded as a completed transaction (Zhang, 2008). For the sellers risk, they have to responsible for some missing goods, even though the delivery companies compensate 50% of goods price. For customers risk, it is hard to post customers some electronic devices. Meanwhile, this kind of products is easy to be broken down. If the customers discovered the damage of the products, after they receive broken goods, they could not return the goods to the seller. The internet shopping makes the efficiency of Taobao decrease. According to Ray (2002), the organizational effectiveness has a significant influence on recruiting talented people and company development. According to Worthys (1962) organizational structure theory, there are two organization structural performances which are the flat organization structure and the tall organizational structure. Whatever the organization belongs to, the communication is always the important part of organizational development. Taobaos employees are separated in the whole of the world. The communication between employee and superior is difficult that the other companies. Even though when some problems arise, the employees can use the internet to communicate with Taobao headquarters. Because of the long distant, plenty problems cannot be solved immediately. Taobao have no too much hierarchical management level, but personally, it belongs to tall organization structure because the communication hard to tra nsmit to the top manager as fast as possible. For this reason, the organizational effectiveness could be influenced. The talented people could be affected by companys performance. Taobao could loss the technical support from those talent people. Conclusion This essay analyzes the advantages and the disadvantages of using the internet in business. The essay uses Taobao e-commerce website as an example. Based on the data from eight resources, the essay divides the whole article into two parts, the advantages of using internet in business and disadvantage of using internet in business. To analysis the reason why Taobao could rapidly increase in resent year and gain more market share. For positive influences, the first the report shows that Taobao is devoted to increase the Chinese GDP under large internet user number, and then the report analyze the new management mode running and management in Taobao. The last, decrease the unemployment rate in China be point out in the essay and how Taobao plays a key role in this social problems. In negative aspect, many people spend too much time and money on online shopping, because the young people do not how to balance their finance. Besides, internet business brings more risks between sellers and buyers, the report introduce the risk could arise in which aspect. Furthermore, internet business could influence the effectiveness of Taobao, the report analysis the reasons and explain the relationship between the talent people and organization efficiency.

Creating a Robot to Guard Property with Lego Mindstorm :: Robotics

The Protectobot Abstract My final project is to build a robot that will use non-violent techniques to keep animals out of yards. Using the Lego Mindstorm Kit I was able to complete this project. When certain animals walk by my robot, it throws gears towards the animal to scare it away. It can tell the difference between good animals and bad, and does not harm them in any way. Background For many years people have been trying to find non-violent ways to keep animals out of their yards and away from family pets. Various attempts have included motion detecting sprinklers, electric fences, fake smells, and ultrasonic sound bursts. These devices work in some cases but not in all. Motion sprinklers spray short bursts of water when they detect animals. Some animals however, like to get wet so the motion sprinklers will not necessarily work on all. Ultrasonic sound burst devices detect when an animal is near and sends out a two second ultrasonic sound burst. These bursts can be heard by animals but not by humans so they may have a hard time figuring out when the batteries run out or when it is broken. Electric fences can sometimes hurt animals, including pets that are allowed to be in our backyards. Fake smells of the animal’s enemy can also help scare the animal away. There are often unwanted animals in my family’s backyard. They eat our fruit from our trees, and tear up our grass. We have been trying to find more effective ways to keep them out for a long time. For my final project, I decided to make a robot that will detect when an animal walks by it. When it detects an animal, it will throw small objects at whatever it is that moved. I have not yet decided what it is that my robot will throw. It has to be harder than a sponge, but cannot be so hard that it will hurt something. As a warning to humans, it will make a beep noise before it throws the object. Procedures I built many small parts to put together to make my functioning robot. It is made up of the launching pad, gear/motor station, the RCX platform, and the head. I first built the launching platform. It is made up of black beams ranging in size from one to sixteen. They are put together in rows with reinforcements on the opposite sides running in the other direction. They came together to form a triangular shape with two gears at the end. I then attached gears and a motor to the platform so that the motor is able

Financial Performance of Dell Incorporation

The net profit derived from every $100 of sales revenue of Dell Incorporation is lower than that of Hewlett Packard Company. This implies that Dell Incorporation charges either a lower selling price or that the company is less efficient in its operations. However, the return on assets and return on equity of Dell Incorporation are far better than those of the other firm. The return on equity computer under the DuPont Analysis is also in favor of Dell Incorporation, whose ratio exceeds that of Hewlett Packard Company by 8%.A high percentage in such financial ratios is always desirable, namely return on assets because it implies that the profitability of the company is substantially safe from unseen changes in the external business environment, like new competitive measures, economic slowdown and more With respect to the utilization of the firm’s fixed assets, Dell Incorporation holds supremacy on such facet when compared with Hewlett Packard Company. The skill in generating sal es from the fixed assets was outstanding for Dell Incorporation in comparison to the other corporation.A sound growth of 27. 18% is also noted in the earnings estimate of the company. This sheds further positive light on Dell Incorporation financial performance. 1. 1 Financial Position of Dell Incorporation The ability of the current assets and most liquid asset to cover the current liabilities is also in favor of Dell Incorporation. This is due to a higher current and quick ratio for such company. Dell Incorporation also portrays a better working capital management both in terms of accounts receivable and inventory. This is due to a higher receivable and inventory turnover. A high receivables turnover ratio indicates that the ability of the company to attain the cash receipts from debtors is good either by effective credit control policies or appropriate maintenance of cash sales. A high inventory turnover shows a good capability in selling inventory. 1. 2 Financial Stability of Del l Incorporation The percentage of total assets financed through debt is lower for Dell Incorporation than the other company as shown by the total debt to total assets ratio. This is a positive element for the financial stability of the organization. In addition, the gearing of Dell Incorporation is lower as indicated by the debt to equity ratio. Lower debt is normally a desirable element because debt finance encompasses higher financial commitments and thus holds greater risk. In practice, normally a debt crisis occurs when an organization fails to pay the interest due on time. Shareholders can wait one year or two without dividends but debt holds do not.Indeed in such instances firms normally face high risk of bankruptcy. The lower debt finance of Dell Incorporation thus mitigates the low interest coverage when compared to the other firm. This ratio evaluates the corporation’s stability in terms of profits generated by the firm and not its capital structure as performed by th e gearing ratio. High interest coverage is normally desirable for high-geared companies. Further more, the leverage of Dell Incorporation is better than the other firm thus further highlighting a sound financial stability.1. 3 Concluding Remark – Investment Decision on Dell Incorporation A good financial health has been noted for Dell Incorporation both in terms of profitability, liquidity and stability when compared with the other company. Indeed supremacy was noted in some areas, such as working capital management. In this respect, it is advisable to buy more stock in the company, since positive prospects are envisaged if the firm will continue to be managed with the same pace.

Bruno Modern Masculinities Essays - Masculinity, Anthropology, Men

Bruno Modern Masculinities Essays - Masculinity, Anthropology, Men Bruno Modern Masculinities Eng 011 13 May 2013 Bruno Modern Masculinities In the article Modern Masculinities, the author Cooper Thompson explains that men in society are expected to be physically strong, tough, and independent, and have self-control over their emotions. He also believes that boys must learn to accept their vulnerability of asking for help and support in appropriate situations. Modern Masculinities relates to the movie The Dress Code because it deals with masculinity in relation to self-control. In the movie Bruno has different ways of showing his masculinity. The Dress Code challenges the stereotypes of masculinity in American culture by showing young viewers that they should not be defined by masculinity but instead define it. One way Bruno shows his masculinity is through bravery and working through fear. For example, in one scene, Bruno wears a dress in a Catholic school, while in a spelling bee contest. The nun whoops Bruno because he wears a dress. The kids bully Bruno in the school, beat him, and call him a faggot. With all of the chaos thats going around him of being bully and beaten, he still comes to school every day wearing a dress and repeating the same cycle. Bruno is not afraid of anybody; he is brave by running away from his bullies and facing up towards them even thou he gets his butt whooped. This shows viewers that no matter how people bully them and call them names, they can be strong to ignore it and live on with their lives. Another way Bruno shows his masculinity is that he is tough. He continues wearing the dress and make-up to the spelling bee contest knowing that the nuns are going to whoop him. When Bruno knows that the nuns are going to whoop him for wearing the dress, Bruno stands up for himself by saying the pope and ancient Greeks wear a dress, so why cant he wear one. Bruno accepts his vulnerability because he knows that people are going to make fun of him and beat him up. Even though Bruno is in a weak position, he is still tough when people are against him. He defends his right of wear a dress. In the same way, Cooper Thompson challenges traditional masculinity stereotypes because he believes that boys must learn to accept their vulnerability when it comes to a situation. The other way of Bruno finds his masculinity is that he is true to himself. He doesnt care what people say or do to him. He is still going to do what he wants to do and thats to wear dresses. For example, at the end of the movie, he wears a white dress at the national spelling bee finals, ends up winning the spelling bee, and gets to meet the pope because of what he wears at the spell bee final. The message the movie sends to young men is that no matter how they look or dress, theres always a good side to being who they are and not everybody else.

Becoming an effective global leader Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Becoming an effective global leader - Essay Example sts of the available literature on how to become an effective global leader in the midst of a dynamic-changing environment in the business realm, other relevant corporate organizations and generally in the global economy. In the global economy, changes are taking place. For every firm to be able to take control of this dynamic change there is a need to employ relevant strategic move. Porter considers the opportunity to implement competitive strategies in order to obtain competitive advantage in the midst of a changing industry driven by tough competition (Porter, 1980; Porter, 2008). For this reason, we have seen Apple Incorporated became a dynamic global leader in its industry because of its ability to produce highly differentiated product offerings. The firm tries to establish the idea that when it comes to the production of advanced communication technology, people and their prospective target customers could rely much on their quality provided product offerings that are already out in the market. Regarding this, Apple has become well-known market leader in its industry. However, this did not come to the firm in the course of just a midnight span of time. In fact, if one has to consider critically what Apple has particularly implemented prior to becoming a global market leader in its industry for innovation and highly differentiated product offerings, there is a great opportunity to consider the relevant involvement of leadership and management. Let us then discuss the relevant difference associated with leadership and management. From the given illustration using the firm Apple, the ultimate reason why it leads in its industry today is due to its ability to manage with change. In fact, leadership could be all about the ability of an organization, firm or individual to manage with change (Mercer and Wyman, 2007; Nahavandi, 2011; Davies, 2005; Kotter, 1990). In today’s highly competitive world, where there is a great implication for great global changes in

To what extent was Nationalism in Africa and Asia in the Early Essay

To what extent was Nationalism in Africa and Asia in the Early Twentieth Century a Mass Movement - Essay Example We will try to focus on this question and try to give the answer to this question further on. The following path of nationalism can be traced: it expanded from the Middle East and started in west Asia and finally it reached North Africa. The main goal of Arab nationalism was to reduce the influence of the western states on their countries. Arabs united their ideas under a common concept "Pan-Arabism". Arab nationalism expanded into a mass movement though initially it was formed by a small number of individuals. We can claim that different regions experienced different complexities and challenges in the process of mass movements of nationalism. The author is focused on the Southern African urban history of Malawi. There was a serious impact of settler colonialism. As a result of Blantyre failure, this region was subjected to the external oppression caused in the process of industrialization. Different African colonies developed a proper reaction to the process of colonization. There a re numerous responses and different reactions to the processes of post-colonization period in the African colonies. Colonialism brought an end to the slavery in Europe. Certainly this great social and political change resulted in expansion of poor people who had a chance to change their lives. Colonialism brought peace to some African areas. ... Asians were oppressed in the region but later Africans were discriminated too. The Africans did not have an opportunity to purchase land. There was an essential decrease of wages and in some occupations there were lower levels of wages increase. During the period between the end of the Second World War and the transition of political power in I964, Blantyre's population increased greatly. Even in 1957 the city's inhabitants lived under conditions of a severe poverty. They could not even buy food for themselves. African businessmen were mainly focused on supporting their stable economic positions. There were two great events following the period of 1953-1962 years: the workers initiated their own movement and they tried to fight for their rights. It was a period of a social turmoil. Only regime of Dr. Banda signifies a progressive development of the region. Unfortunately, trade unions were too weak and people showed ineffective struggle for their independence. The workers in Blantyre had an opportunity to promote their interests after they were inspired by Dr Banda. Another study is devoted to Syria. Political movements, social and economic changes in the life of this country are taken into account by the author of the study. A great interest of the historians to this country has been shown starting from 1960s. As a rule, development of Syria has been considered in terms of a cultural context. There were dependent ties in Syria, such as vertical and parochial connections (McCracken). The author further claims: "Not until the management had backed down by agreeing to the appointment of a Tribunal of Inquiry did the strikers come together in a mass meeting as members of the union. And

Science fiction and films Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Science fiction and films - Essay Example The cyber punk nature of the film ‘Blade Runner’ is explicable as it involves the speculation of role of computerised human clones of the future, which is stimulating. As the film is associated with rave/techno subculture and substitutes enthusiastic blathering about technology, the cyber punk nature of the film was expressed in the way of narration and visuals. As the film involves the exciting about right things and a proper and respectful way of hacking the talent, the film excels in being a science fiction genre that explicitly talks about computerised clones of humans. As the computerised clones in the film are expressed in a highly criminalised manner, the necessity of expression of the criminal nature needs some symbolic lighting and expression that involves the value of life and humanity. As the lead character in the film Deckard prowls in the steel and micro chip jungle of 21st Century, the cyber punk nature of the film is explicitly seen in every inch of the na rration and story. However, the expression of humanity, detachment and precious nature of life involved inherently in the film give it a combined colour of film noir sub genre in addition to cyber punk sub genre for a science fiction genre film.... In addition to that the theme of the film concentrates on the replicant nature of Deckard and the reaction of Gaff about Deckard's dreams. As Gaff will be in control of a replicant the plot is to field an android to destroy unwanted androids. From here, the film introduces film noir sub genre in addition to the cyber punk sub genre in a science fiction genre film. The film noir genre and content of the film lies in the criminal background of replicants and a state killer tracking down them. As the plot is to murder the artificial people for their illegal acts (wanting to live more than the stipulated time against the wishes of the administration), the film noir nature of the film is expressed well by frequent voice over in the film. 2 In addition to that the general brutality (the brutality of four replicants, whom Deckard has to execute) violence and harsh dialogue are present in the characters. The harsh dialogue can be seen in the expression of the leader of the replicants who confront with their creator. As the inherent activities of replicants are related to crime and horror, the lead character also express some attributes of film noir with a trench coat and a gun. In addition to that there are anti hero characters in Deckard as he drinks too much, loner and does not trusts authorities. Though Deckard is a detective, the harsh dialogues like "They do not advertise for killers. I am not in the business. I am the business. If You are not a cop, you are little people", makes the narration of the film to have a noir type of content. One more aspect that establishes the noir nature in the film is that the violence is brutal and graphic. As the duty of Deckard is fatal (he is to kill the

Love, Death and Fascist Iconography Essay Example for Free

Love, Death and Fascist Iconography Essay To the fascist artist, his or her own art is merely a vessel that encapsulates his or her own socially-motivated beliefs. The works of Yukio Mishima and Leni Riefenstahl, for instance, embody the essence of their individual nationalities at the height of their individual careers—nationalities that might transcend origin and geography, yet extol   culture, tradition, ritual and society.   Mishima and Riefenstahl exhibit incredible parallelism in their works. Mishima, in his short story Patriotism, describe the human form with such detail and meticulousness reminiscent of Riefenstahl’s style in her 1930’s films. Much like Riefenstahl’s The Last of the Nuba, the naked body is depicted as a means of fascist iconography—the body, perfect and pure in its own way, merges with a bigger community of bodies of like characteristics (Evans 31). Susan Sontag’s treatise on the works of Riefenstahl, Fascinating Fascism, breaks down the latter’s appreciation and fascination of the strong and beautiful Nuba figure as examples of Nazi ideology corresponding to the idea of aesthetics for fascists. Sontag writes, â€Å"Riefenstahl’s portrait of them evokes some of the larger themes of Nazi ideology: the contrast between the clean and the impure, the incorruptible and the defiled, the physical and the mental, the joyful and the critical (par. 27).† This description is echoed in Mishima’s Patriotism, when the lead character Takeyama decides to commit seppuku—ritual suicide by disembowelment—as an act of redemption from the dishonor incurred when his comrades formed alliances with the mutineers.   Mishima’s imagery of Takeyama and his wife Reiko’s preparations for the ritual, as well as the metaphors he uses in describing the couple’s physical forms conveys a fascination for perfection and beauty a la Riefenstahl—remarkable symbols of fascist iconography, as Sontag would consider. In its own effect, Takeyama, Reiko and the Nuba become examples of the â€Å"master race†, where everyone is beautiful, strong, and does not age (Trimborn McCown 256). Mishima and Riefenstahl’s works are also parallel in such that their depictions of death are detailed, beautiful and almost enthralling.     In Patriotism, death in is portrayed as a reward, a happy and celebrated ceremony that requires the utmost preparation. In the Nuba culture, death is a central event, along with fighting. In the Japanese culture, as evidenced by Mishima’s paramount detail in describing Takeyama’s death, death is a way for one to demonstrate his or her enduring loyalty and nationalism to the Imperial system. Death in both Mishima and Riefenstahl’s works surpass life’s merriest events—birth, marriage, love—at times besting even life itself. Mishima writes, â€Å"All around, vastly and untidily, stretched the country for which he grieved. He was to give his life for it. But would that great country, which he was prepared to remonstrate to the extent of destroying himself take the slightest heed of his death? He did not know; and not matter (par. 63).† Takeyama’s examination of self not only mirrors the authors suggestions of his own death wish, it also echoes the sentiments of those under the spell of a fascist ideology—their so-called patriotism—that converts their idea of nationhood as something not only territorial, but equally and incredibly spiritual. The young lieutenant and his bride chose their own death by seppuku, which may be seen as either an honorable and extremely devout approach, or as a self-destructive and deadly consequence of their fanaticism. Mishima unintentionally diverts the reader’s attention from this concept with his alluring illustrations of fascist ideals and concepts, again reminiscent of Riefenstahl’s imagery in her Nazi films. Sontag would consider it an absolute expression of fascist art, in the sense that it â€Å"glorifies surrender, exalts mindlessness, and glamorizes death (par. 36).† Above everything, Mishima verifies in his work and own life the burden that comes with the duty to abide by cultural tradition—duty can be all in one beautiful or ugly, life or death. heroin Essay -- essays research papers

Society today has been clouded and somewhat overtaken by social drugs. Wherever you may look, a drug is being used, whether it is more commonly a cigarette being smoked on the street, or the covert teens smoking marijuana in secluded areas. In any case, there is not one person who can say drug use is not prevalent, since society has made it clear through news, music and everyday life. However, there are certain drugs that seem to be worse than others, and society once again has taught us that through our laws and restrictions. The worse the drug, the more you pay for having it. Basically, drugs have become a part of our life, and you never know when they can land on your doorstep.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  An illegal drug, which has taken firm ground in society, is heroin. Analysis of Sonnet 75 (Amoretti) by Edmund Spenser Essay

Sonnet 75 is taken from Edmund Spenser’s poem Amoretti which was published in 1595. The poem has been fragmented into 89 short sonnets that combined make up the whole of the poem. The name Amoretti itself means â€Å"little notes† or â€Å"little cupids. † This poem is said to have been written on Spenser’s love affair and eventual marriage to Elizabeth Boyle, his second wife. Sonnet 75 centers on the immortality of spiritual love and the temporality of physical love. In the seventy-fifth sonnet of Amoretti, the line scheme of three quatrains and a rhyming couplet is employed. The rhyme scheme is the typical Spenserian sonnet format of the first quatrain being ABAB, the second being BCBC, the third CDCD and the couplet EE. It follows the meter of the iambic pentameter. The first quatrain has a narrative feel to it because of the beginning â€Å"One day I †¦Ã¢â‚¬ The second quatrain starts with a dialogue by a female, most probably the beloved. The third quatrain is an answer again in a conversation because of the use of â€Å"quoth I. † The couplet at the end gives the conclusion like a fact because it uses the present participle tense. Sonnet 75 is a lyric because it tells of the poet’s personal experience. Spenser writes this sonnet in the typical Petrarchan style. It is written in the pursuit of a woman whom he loves. The rhyme scheme coincides with the Petrarchan model. The whole sonnet reeks of the use of imagery. The very opening lines, â€Å"One day I wrote her name upon the strand, But came the waves and washed it away:† create a vivid image of the sea-side. Other excerpts from the sonnet that produce a visual effect are â€Å"decay,† â€Å"wiped out,† â€Å"die in dust,† and â€Å"in the heavens write your glorious name. † while the first three evoke negative images, the last one paints a beautiful, fantastical picture in the mind. The short sonnet incorporates alliteration very often, for instance, â€Å"die in dust,† â€Å"verse your virtue,† â€Å"love shall live,† â€Å"later life,† etc. The sounds that have been continuously been employed are /d/, /w/ and /l/. Alliteration throughout is helping form the images. The /w/ sound in â€Å"waves and washed it away† help create an audio impact of the swishing waves. The repetitive /d/ gives an ominous sound and is used for all such words, for example â€Å"decay,† â€Å"die,† â€Å"death,† etc. There is also repetition of certain words. â€Å"Vain† appears twice in one line. Then, the concept of mortality is conveyed through â€Å"mortal,† â€Å"immortalize† and â€Å"eternize. † The sonnet is rife with symbolism. The sea alludes to the distance that is between the lover and his beloved which is causing pain to the lover. The writing on the sand refers to the lover’s insistence on making a worldly impact on his beloved. The waves are a constant reminder of the cruelty of love, haunting again and again. By washing away the name of the beloved, the waves act as torrents of torture. The sea-side or beach also symbolizes a peaceful, comfortable place where the lover unreservedly expresses himself. The lover’s writing on the sand can be a reference to man’s inherent desire to eternalize his being to be remembered forever. The waves here signify time. The erasing of the name by water signifies the transient nature of human life. It points towards the futility of man’s aspirations for immortality, especially poets who wish to be eternalized through their works. However, irrespective of how many times he may try to make his life meaningful, it is pointless. Everything is transitory and will eventually be destroyed. Personification is an important element in the sonnet. The sea or waves are given human qualities. It â€Å"washed,† and â€Å"made my paynes his pray. † Washing and preying or inflicting pain upon someone are human qualities. The poet has dexterously presented a contrast between the earthly and the celestial ideas and things. While in the first half of the poem, time and nature destroy the poet’s writing and attempts to immortalize it; in the second half the poet immortalizes his eternal, spiritual love through his writings. One of the indirect implications of the typical fifteenth century women being docile and subservient can be found in the waves being given a masculine quality. Normally, nature is associated with the female entity because both are responsible for giving and sustaining life. Here, however, the author’s reason for giving a masculine identity to nature must be because of the malignant role it is playing. Edmund Spenser’s Sonnet 75 from Amorreti is not only an exquisite piece of Elizabethan times, it portrays the quintessential poetry of the time as well. His optimal employment of literary techniques of form, rhyme, imagery, personification and alliteration give the sonnet a wholesome structure and an pleasant quality. Theme : When he writes her name on the sand, her name is washed away by the waves. He tries again and again but his all attempts when the tide is in will be washed. The lover here emphasize that allegorically; The tide represents â€Å"the time† and The sand of seashore represents his â€Å"memories† The word â€Å"tide† refers to the word â€Å"time† also in means of written and â€Å"sand† also refers to his memories because memory is a reflection of the past and it has a particular shape in minds to indicate particular moments and events which we experienced. but this shape in time becomes uncertain as the time passed memory skips over some important or trivial details. So everthing can be forgetton, ,n memory there can be nothing everlasting JUST LIKE HER NAME ON THE SAND OF SEASHORE.. the poet has a great longing to immortalize her name. But he deduces that nature wants to explain that love is temporary. Because when he wrote her name the tide washes it away. Then the lady speaks that his effort is in vain he can not change the intrinsic nature of the mortality. She believes every mortal thing will be perished. She is offended by his attempt to immortalize her. But the lover believes when the love becomes immortal her name will be written in heaven. THE AMORETTI. Edmund Spenser – Sonnet 75 One day I wrote her name upon the strand, But came the waves and washed it away: Again I wrote it with a second hand, But came the tide, and made my pains his prey. Vain man, said she, that doest in vain assay A mortal thing so to immortalize, For I myself shall like to this decay, And eek my name be wiped out likewise. Not so (quoth I), let baser things devise To die in dust, but you shall live by fame: My verse your virtues rare shall eternize, And in the heavens write your glorious name. Where whenas Death shall all the world subdue, Out love shall live, and later life renew. â€Å" One day I wrote her name upon the strand ’’ This a case of Hyperbaton because the normal order of wards has been changed . The ordinary syntactic order world have been â€Å"I wrote her name upon the strand’’. â€Å"Again I wrote it with a second hand, But came the tyde , and made my paynes his pray ’’ This is a case of Transferred Epithet [ Hypallage ] The epithet ‘ second ’ properly belongs to time rather than to hand . It may also a case of personification since ‘tide’ is seen as hunting down the efforts of the poet. ‘ For I myself shall like to this decay, And eek my name by urped out likeirse†. This is a case of simile . The poet points to the similarity between the destruction of the engraved name by the sea and the death caused to the lady by time, the similarity is explicitly stated by the use of word ‘like’. â€Å"Not so,’ quod I, â€Å" let baser things devize † To die in dust but you shall live by fame ’ – This is a case of antithesis where two opposed ideas are balanced against each other to the same effect . The two ideas contrasted are the idea of the meaner things being reduced to dust by time on the one hand, and the idea of the superior beloved ‘ transcending this by fame , on the other . â€Å"Where when as death shall all the world subdew, Our love shall live, and later life renew † It is a case of Antithesis since the two opposed ideas of the death of the world and the living of their love are balanced against each other. This is also a cause of Epigram . Ordinarily the idea of the renewal of love after life may seem absurd, but on thinking more deeply one realizes that their love would indeed be renewed by the later generations of lovers who would model their love on the poet’s.

To Be, or Not to Be Black Essay

To Be, or Not to Be Black Essay To Be, or Not to Be Black Essay To Be, or Not to Be Black â€Å"Are you black?† is a question that I have encountered in my life countless times. The following conversations are always so similar it is almost as if they were scripted. I answer â€Å"yes†, but the person proceeds to tell me why I am not black. They say that I am too light-skinned, that I have â€Å"white-people hair†, or that I do not act black. I always wonder what makes these people think that they have the authority to tell me who I am. Despite being annoyed by their ignorance, I explain how I am indeed a black person. Having to constantly deal with encounters such as these has conditioned me to be ready to prove that I am black to anyone that questions me. It is troubling that people have to provide reasons as to why they are black, but it seems as if that is how society is today. After my experiences and observations of the â€Å"black† world around me, it has become evident that the population of â€Å"true† black people is very limited. Being â€Å"black" involves meeting certain standards set by society, dealing with stereotypes on a daily basis, and the ever so constant struggle to climb the social ladder. According to the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary, black means â€Å"of or relating to a race of people who have dark skin and who come originally from Africa† (Merriam-Webster). The Oxford English Dictionary defines black in a variety of ways ranging from â€Å"denoting a member of any dark-skinned group of peoples†, to â€Å"enveloped in darkness†, and â€Å"deeply stained with dirt; soiled, filthy, begrimed† (OED Online). If official dictionaries recognize that anyone from African descent is black, why is that society cannot? Discrepancies between the dictionary definition of black and society’s definition of black elicit the controversy of what makes someone black. It appears that society has unofficial requirements a person must meet in order to be considered black. A person must act a certain way, do certain things, and go through certain kinds of experiences a â€Å"true† black person would go through. A friend once told me that if I have not seen the movie Love and Basketball I am not black because every black person has seen it. That comment struck a nerve because it was ridiculous that according to her, the difference between being black and white was something as simple as seeing a movie. Another requirement black people have to meet is how a black person should look. Apparently, a black person should be dark skinned and should not have â€Å"good† hair. However, this is the complete opposite of reality because black people have evolved into many different looks and makes. Now it seems as if the number of â€Å"true† black people is slowly shrinking. Stereotypes play a role in the daily life of black people. Sadly, most of the time the negative stereotypes are what represent black people as a whole. As a result from the stereotyping, a lot of other cultures look down on black people and their ways. Some of the stereotypes claim that all black people are thugs, low-lives, basketball players, and all sag their pants. The striking fact is that most of the stereotypes exist in other cultures, yet the focus is always on black people. Negative stereotypes have such a prominent role in black culture that the positive outcomes in the black community are often dismissed. For example, some of the country’s best entertainers, athletes, and politicians, including the President, are black (Raspberry 315). Even if these â€Å"elite† black people have not gained respect from everyone, no one can deny the fact that they are successful. Many fall victim to the dismissal of success when they should be receiving praise for their accomplishments. It is almost as if all black people are being placed into a proverbial box of people that are bad influences. Stereotypes shou ld never be allowed to become a blanket term for a group of people. Everyone is unique and society needs to start acknowledging this fact. The Oxford English Dictionary’s

The Need to Care for the Environment Essays

The Need to Care for the Environment Essays The Need to Care for the Environment Paper The Need to Care for the Environment Paper Whether the issue is air pollution, endangered species, re-cycling, or clean water, all environmental scientists, educators, and policy-makers agree that the key to public understanding is public education. Without a thorough understanding of the problems facing the planet in terms of its fragile environment, humanity is on a collision course with disaster. It is not enough to warn people, impose economic sanctions, and establish strict regulations. People must understand why they should recycle, how they can take care of their waste, and what they can do to lessen their own individual impact on the earth. It is also essential that environmental education be appropriate and applicable to the person doing the learning. Too often, environmental education focuses on a topic far removed from the reality of the student. A child living in the mountains can have all the concern in the world for the manatee or the blue whale and be completely unaware of the forest degradation going on in her own mountain backyard. Likewise a Brentwood student can be vitally concerned about the nuclear waste dumps in the desert but still mindlessly damage her own unique environment. In order for environmental education to be truly effective it must be both relevant and applicable. Such awareness may be the only truly viable option that exists that can make a difference in saving or renewing the earths rapidly diminishing natural resources. Such education must be fully integrated so that the student can understand the interrelatedness of all aspects of the environment, including her role within it. Once a person understands that all life on earth, not just human life, is dependent on the health and protection of the environment, it is no longer possible to dismiss the planet as a nothing more than an object designed to meet human needs and desires. The most valuable time to begin such environmental education and awareness is with teenagers while they have not yet lost their sense of connection to all that surrounds them. In order to best communicate the importance of the environment and the need to care for it as vigilantly as human beings care for themselves, students must begin to learn at an early age to respect the earth, its environment and all of its inhabitants. The environment is not some abstract concept. That lesson must continue to be taught and learned throughout life in order to facilitate meaningful change. Each individual must understand the consequences of her actions on the surrounding environment, whether it is in a rural area or city. Teenagers are, admittedly, creatures of self-interest but certainly there can be no greater service to oneself than the assurance that there is clean air to breathe, fresh water to drink, healthy food to eat or sanitary housing. The foundation and encouragement of that self-interest is education. Beginning in the first years of school, children are taught the processes of life on this planet. Even very young kids can easily understand that a strong plant cannot grow in unhealthy soil or that trash does not simply disappear. There can be no more valuable lesson than how to not poison oneself through unthinking or greed-based actions. Active recycling is genuinely a better lesson than algebra and living more simply in the midst of a consumer-driven society is undeniably more useful than memorizing the dates of battles long since fought. Environmental education can and does make a difference and is a valuable ideal for the future.
